Capitole du Libre 2025
I had the chance to participate to Capitole du Libre 2025, a Libre Software themed weekend hosted at ENSEEIHT, Toulouse.
I've learned a lot and discovered many inspiring stories and some cool Libre Software projects.
In this article I'll share with you my notes and highlights from this wonderful event.
Inspiring Stories
Cloud Du Cœur
- Conference: Comment nous avons transformé les Restos du Cœur en Cloud Provider
- Speaker : Julien Briault
This is the story of Julien Briault, a network engineer at Deezer, also a volunteer at Restaurants du Cœur, who had a "litte idea" just like Coluche did when he launched the idea of the Restos du Cœur; His idea was to transform the IT departement of the association into a a solid cloud provider able to enable an autonomus, low-cost cloud while meeting the IT needs of the different +114 departmental organisations.
From the computer that hangs in the corner to a fully robust scalable infrastructure, the conference was rich in content and memes, and the speaker was very entertaining with a great storytelling following the different milestones of this ambitious project.
The Cloud Du Cœur, by relying only on Free software, was able to reduce the costs of the different licenses that the association has avoided to pay when using proprietary software, because every 1 euro spent matters because 1 euro = 1 meal.

Ville d'Echirolles
- Conference: Passer au libre, c'est changer de monde !
- Speaker : Nicolas Vivant
In this inspiring conference, Nicolas Vivant presents his success story into migrating the city of Echirolles from an organisation using mainly Windows and Big Tech software to a Linux based computers with mostly Free Software.
The idea is simple, don't rush and be patient, it's a huge mistake to flip the switch on one run, the transition needs to be graduale but most importantly it requires a fourbe approach.
What I learned from this conference is that resistance to change is normal. The best way to minimize this resistance is to make the transition as seamless as possible, so seamless that, as in the story shared by Nicolas Vivant, someone once emailed him asking when they could migrate to Linux, even though they had already been using it for months without realizing it.
List of some Free Software encountered in the event
Arsenik
If you are not sure if you should buy that expensive ergonomic keyboard, Arsenik is your tool.
It allows to configure your keyboard, even if it is not programmable, with a beginner-friendly approach to minimize finger movements.
PeerTube
PeerTube is a Free Software that allows you to create your own video platform, in complete independence, with no opaque algorithms or obscure moderation policies.
Moreover, PeerTube does not depend on any advertising and does not track you!
GNU Guix
GNU Guix is a package manager for GNU/Linux systems. It is designed to give users more control over their general-purpose and specialized computing environments, and make these easier to reproduce over time and deploy to one or many devices.
Conclusion
Capitole du Libre was my first Free Software conference ever. It was overwhelming and, to be honest, sometimes intimidating to be surrounded by so many skilled, passionate, and interesting people. But I had a lot of fun learning new things and having conversations with the different actors in the Free Software world.
